Getting started

  1. Open Settings › Google Drive and press Connect. Your browser opens Google's own consent screen; approve it and the window hands control back to the app.
  2. In Settings › Folders, add the folders you want backed up — one way, deletions kept.
  3. In Settings › Sync, add the folders you want kept in step across devices — both ways, deletions travel.
  4. In Settings › Schedule, choose how often a backup runs. Anything from every minute to daily.

Why can I not add the same folder to both Folders and Sync?

Because doing so quietly breaks both. Every change the sync writes would be re-uploaded by the next backup, and a file the sync deleted would come back out of the backup's archive on the following run. The app refuses the second one and tells you which side already has it.

I deleted a file. Can I get it back?

If it was in a backed-up folder, yes: the copy in Drive was moved into a dated archive folder sitting next to your backup, not deleted. Open Drive and look for the folder with the same name plus _deleted, then the date.

If it was in a synced folder, the deletion travelled to Drive as intended. Google Drive's own trash is the place to look, and it keeps deleted items for 30 days.

The menu bar has gone amber. What does that mean?

A backup is overdue — the last successful run is older than it should be for your schedule. It is a warning, not a failure. Red means either 24 hours with no successful backup, or the most recent run actually failed. Open the dashboard to see which.

I pressed Back Up Now and it said one is already running.

That is deliberate. A backup already in flight is left to finish rather than joined by a second copy of itself — two processes writing the same destination is how sync tools damage the thing they were meant to protect. Wait for the current run to finish, or watch its progress in the dashboard.

Does my data pass through your servers?

No. Files go from your Mac straight to your own Google Drive. There is no dfacto server in the path and nothing is relayed through us, so we have no way to read your files.

I already use rclone. Will this interfere?

No. The app keeps its own configuration file in its own Application Support folder, readable only by you, and never reads or writes ~/.config/rclone/rclone.conf. Your existing remotes are untouched.

A synced folder has not updated on my phone.

Check three things in order: the folder is enabled in Settings › Sync; the first sync for that folder has completed (a new pair shows first sync will establish the baseline until it has); and the Google Drive app on the phone is signed into the same account.

Uninstalling

Quit the app and move it to the Trash. To remove everything it stored, delete ~/Library/Application Support/ai.dfacto.gdrivebackup, which holds your settings, run history and Drive token. Your files in Google Drive are left exactly as they are.
